Groovefest is run mostly by people who give their time. The archived volunteer page had a short invitation to help, and then a list of the community organisations that held information tables in 2015.

Volunteers

The festival has always relied on volunteers to set up, welcome visitors, staff tables, help performers and clean up afterwards. Typical roles at an outdoor community festival include:

  • setting up stages, tents and signage before the event;
  • greeting visitors and answering questions;
  • helping vendors and performers find their places;
  • managing recycling and tidying the park at the end of the day.

The contact details given on the original page are no longer current, and we do not repeat them.

Community tables in 2015

Information tables give local groups a free place to talk with visitors. In 2015 these included animal welfare groups (a primate sanctuary, a rabbit rescue and a dog rescue), a vegan group, a Quaker meeting, a local news outlet, a health practice, voter-engagement groups, a reproductive-justice coalition and a campaign office for a US presidential candidate. These are listed as part of the festival’s mix of community voices and do not imply endorsement of any position.

Getting started as a volunteer at any festival

If you have never volunteered at a community event, a few habits help. Arrive on time and wear comfortable shoes. Introduce yourself to the shift lead, ask what the priorities are and stay in your assigned area unless asked otherwise. Bring water, sunscreen and a hat for an outdoor day, and take breaks so you can stay cheerful until the end.
